Is Brad Stevens feeling the itch to coach again? Because if he does, there’s a huge job opening in college basketball that he may be interested in.
Stevens is a name floated by Matt Norlander of CBS Sports as a possible target for the North Carolina Tar Heels, who parted ways with Hubert Davis following an embarrassing first-round loss in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
According to Norlander’s sources, North Carolina is going to start its coaching search by looking in the direction of the Boston Celtics current president of basketball operations.
“Yeah, I’ve been talking with a few sources here going back about five days now, and here are the names you need to know for North Carolina, as has been told to me that the school and its leadership will be initially targeting. Brad Stevens? Yes, that Brad Stevens. He is on the list,” Norlander said on Tuesday.
Of course, interest has to go both ways, and Norlander isn’t sure whether Stevens would be open to coaching the Tar Heels.
“Whether or not he would seriously consider this remains a very, very, very open question. There’s a lot of skepticism that he would even consider it,” Norlander added.
What seems certain for Norlander is that the 49-year-old Stevens is “the number one person on the [North Carolina’s] list.”
Before he joined the NBA ranks, Stevens made a name for himself when he led the Butler Bulldogs to consecutive national championship game appearances in 2010 and 2011.
