Alabama QB Tyler Buchner announces decision about his future
Tyler Buchner is headed back to South Bend, though not immediately.
Buchner shared a post on X Wednesday that detailed his future plans. The current Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback said that he will be transferring back to Notre Dame, where he will play lacrosse in the spring and graduate in May. However, he will remain with the Crimson Tide through the College Football Playoff.
“I am excited to return to ND to play lacrosse and graduate in May,” Buchner wrote on X. “Prior to that, I’ll be continuing my initial commitment to Alabama Football through the playoff and finishing what I started. I can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support.”

Word came out on December 4 that Buchner had entered the transfer portal, but with the intention of switching sports. Buchner, who is from San Diego, Calif., was a top lacrosse prospect before switching his focus to football in high school. He initially attended Notre Dame and played quarterback for the Irish. Then he followed Tommy Rees to Tuscaloosa when the coach was hired by the Tide to serve as their offensive coordinator.
Buchner has seen limited playing time this season and has competed with Ty Simpson to serve as Jalen Milroe’s backup.
For his football career, Buchner has passed for 1,010 yards, 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He has also rushed for 479 yards and 8 touchdowns.
The Tide face Michigan at the Rose Bowl on January 1.
