The Arkansas Razorbacks have a veteran player on their football roster.

Monte Harrison is entering his sophomore season with Arkansas. He is a 6-foot-3 wide receiver, and he is turning 30 years old on August 10. He is about a decade older than your standard college athlete. He’s also already had a professional career as a baseball player.

Harrison was a top athlete coming out of Lee’s Summit West in Missouri in high school, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was a 4-star football recruit at the time but decided to pursue professional baseball after being drafted No. 50 overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014.

Harrison primarily played center field. He was traded to the Miami Marlins in the deal that sent Christian Yelich to Milwaukee. Harrison was able to make it up to the majors with Miami, and also had a brief MLB stint with the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. He batted .176 with two career home runs in the majors, and stole 7 bases in 50 games.

Most of Harrison’s time was spent in the minors, where he played in 770 career games from 2014-2023. He hit 90 home runs and stole 210 bases during his minor-league career.

As a freshman for Arkansas last season, Harrison saw action in 11 games. He played on special teams and had 2 catches for 29 yards as a receiver.

Harrison isn’t the first college football player on the older side, nor is he the first one to pursue a college football career after playing professional baseball. Chris Weinke pursued a professional baseball career but then quit to played quarterback at Florida State. He won the Heisman Trophy at age 28 and later had an NFL career where he played in 29 games.
