Art Briles accuses Baylor of wrongful termination
The situation between Art Briles and Baylor could get a lot uglier in the near future, as the former coach is accusing the school of wrongful termination.
In a motion filed Thursday as part of a lawsuit against Briles and Baylor from a woman who claims she was raped by a football player, Briles said he is not interested in settling with the accuser and has asked a judge to assign him new attorneys. According to The Associated Press, the legal team representing Briles has also demanded that Baylor turn over all of its files related to the sexual assault scandal that has ripped through the Bears football program.
Baylor attorneys last week expressed interest in settling with the woman who is suing, but Thursday’s motion says Briles “does not wish to settle.” Additionally, he has accused Baylor of firing him without proper cause and using information he shared in an April 7 meeting with school lawyers to support his firing.
A recent report indicated that some Baylor boosters were pushing for a one-year suspension for Briles rather than parting ways with him permanently. There were other rumblings that Briles and school officials were close to reaching a settlement for the roughly $40 million he is owed over the next eight years. All of that seems fair less likely now.
