Could Bob Stoops be a candidate for USC head coach job?

Bob Stoops

The USC Trojans’ coaching situation is in flux, and now another big name has been mentioned as a possibility.

On Sunday, Adam Maya, a USC-specific reporter for SI, said that Clay Helton would be fired and that USC would target Urban Meyer for the job. The report was disputed by several national reporters, and as of a day later, Helton still had not been fired.

If USC decides to fire Helton and go swinging for a big-name coach, one possibility could be Bob Stoops, according to a report.

The LA Daily News’ Scott Wolf says Stoops’ name is one that is being mentioned among coaches as a possibility for USC.

Stoops stepped aside at Oklahoma to make way for Lincoln Riley after the 2016 season. His name has been mentioned for many potential coaching jobs since, but he is currently serving as the GM and head coach of the XFL’s Dallas Renegades. After his name was mentioned in connection with the Florida State job, Stoops did not rule out an eventual return to college.

If he ever wanted to return, USC would be a great spot. They have a winning tradition, great location for in-state recruits, and the ability to win a national championship.
