Dameyune Craig shocked many people when he left his position as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Auburn to become LSU’s wide receivers coach.
To most, the move sounds like a lateral move at best, and perhaps a step down at worst. The former Auburn QB feels otherwise.
“I don’t look at it as a lateral move,” Craig said at a media event Wednesday, via The Times-Picayune. “In your career, you have personal goals and you have team goals that you set. I have always set those, as a player and now as a coach. You just want to see men grow up and develop in your career, on and off the field. That was part of the reason for coming here. Getting a chance to work for Coach Miles is definitely not a lateral move. I hope you don’t think it is in any way.”
Craig’s argument doesn’t sound too convincing. However, he did perhaps shed some light on the decision Sunday with quotes from a statement announcing the move.
“It is strictly a professional decision. It’s about growing as a coach and, hopefully, one day becoming a head coach.”
Did Craig feel like Auburn and Gus Malzahn were not going to give him a chance to move up the ladder? Or does he feel like being at a better program like LSU could result in more people trying to hire him for greater positions and promotions? Perhaps it’s the latter. Either way, his move has created a stir within the SEC.
