Dirk Koetter, Jeff Tedford reportedly finalists for Boise State job

Dirk KoetterDirk Koetter and Jeff Tedford are finalists for the Boise State head coaching job, according to a report.

Football Scoop says Koetter is working out details for the job, and that the school’s decision should be finalized Tuesday night.

The vacancy was created when longtime Broncos coach Chris Petersen left to take the Washington job.

Koetter, who is currently the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons, was the Boise State head coach from 1998-2000. He took over the program shortly after it moved up to Division I and joined the Big West Conference. Under Koetter, Boise State went 26-10, won the Big West twice and won two bowl games. After experiencing success at Boise State, Koetter took the Arizona State job. He went 40-34 in six seasons at ASU and was eventually fired. Koetter went to the NFL and became the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars before leaving for the Falcons. This is his second season as the OC of the Falcons.

Tedford was fired last year after 11 seasons as the head coach of the Cal Golden Bears football program. He turned around a 1-10 football team and went 7-5 in his first year at Cal. Overall, he went 82-57 as head coach of the Bears, but he was fired after having two losing seasons in a three-year span, including a 3-9 campaign in 2012. His poor 2012 season probably looks more forgivable now that his replacement, Sonny Dykes, went 1-11 this season.

Either coach would probably have success at the program, but Koetter seems like the most natural fit because of the success he experienced there before. One things fans need to consider is now that the team is in the Mountain West, those double-digit win totals won’t be as easy to achieve as they were before.
