Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is on the verge of losing one of his top quarterbacks after Justin Fields entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Tuesday, but he appears to have stolen a potential replacement away from Ohio State.
Dwan Mathis, one of the top dual-threat quarterback prospects in the country, flipped his commitment on Wednesday from Ohio State to Georgia.

The timing probably isn’t a coincidence. Schools are now free to contact Fields, a former five-star recruit, now that he has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. All signs point to him transferring rather than playing another year behind Jake Fromm at Georgia, and there’s even a chance he could find a way to become eligible to play immediately at his new school.
Mathis probably would not have been able to play right away at Ohio State with Dwayne Haskins looking like he’s going to return for another season, and there’s also some uncertainty with the program now that Urban Meyer is retiring. All of those factors likely went into the QB deciding to flip his commitment to Georgia.
