Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Hal Mumme was cold as ice following a Southern Miss upset of Kentucky on Saturday.

Shortly after the Golden Eagles rallied from a 35-17 halftime deficit to defeat the Wildcats by a score of 44-35, Mumme hit Facebook to offer his congratulations to Shannon Dawson, his former pupil who now leads Southern Miss a year after being fired by Kentucky’s Mark Stoops.

Congrats to Jay Hopson, USM, and my former brilliant Assistant Shannon Dawson on a great win in the sec. Shannon is smartest fb coach I’ve known for a great while.

To his credit, Stoops took his lumps like a man, praising Dawson during the postgame press conferences and even acknowledging he had been “outcoached.”

“They did a heck of a job. They outcoached us and outplayed us,” Stoops said via The Courier-Journal. “Coach Dawson and all that he’s gone through, I am happy for him. Obviously, I want our team to play better, but he did a heck of a job and they kept us off balance.”

Dawson may get another shot at Stoops and Kentucky next year. As part of the $200,000 contract for their game this season, a return trip to Hattiesburg to open the 2017 season has also reportedly been agreed upon.
