Malik Zaire is set to graduate from Notre Dame this year but has one year of eligibility left. The word is he’s expected to leave the school and play elsewhere next season as a graduate transfer.
Scout’s Pete Sampson reported Tuesday that Zaire is set to meet with Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly on Wednesday. He is expected to be granted his release from the school, at which point he would be free to transfer.
Sampson says Florida, Pittsburgh, Michigan State and Wisconsin are schools that are the top contenders for the QB.
Zaire had a strong game as a sophomore while leading Notre Dame to a bowl victory in 2014. He then began the 2015 season as the Fighting Irish’s starting quarterback, throwing for 313 yards and 3 touchdowns against Texas in the season opener. He got hurt the next game and was replaced by DeShone Kizer, who held the starting job through this season.
Zaire attempted 23 passes this season in limited action scattered across multiple games.
