Mitch Trubisky is getting a lot of buzz as a potential top pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, but the North Carolina quarterback still has not decided yet if he will go pro.
Trubisky is preparing his Tar Heels for the Sun Bowl against Stanford on Dec. 30 and says he will evaluate things after the game.
“I’ll take it day by day. I know I’m going to make the decision that’s best for me,” Trubisky said on Monday. “I’m really not thinking about too much because I’m focusing on the bowl game first. After the game we’ll go from there and I’ll talk about it with my family some more.
One of the matters Trubisky has to weigh is the benefit of returning to school to gain more experience vs. leaving for the NFL when his stock is as high as it is. This was the junior’s first season as the team’s starter, and he has thrown for 28 touchdowns and four interceptions.
“It’s a confusing subject — that’s the big debate,” Trubisky said of the decision. “What’s going to be best for my preparation? Will my stock ever be as high as it is right now? That’s one of the things I’ve been thinking about. And I really don’t have a clear-cut answer for you.”
Trubisky says he has talked with his coaches about the decision. He has been given data about 1-year college starters who have gone pro and he is weighing everything.
Staying at UNC for another season might be best for Trubisky’s development, but it might be hard to turn down the NFL when he knows he has a chance to be a top-10 pick. When you see stories like this one, it’s very hard to turn down the millions and other possibilities that can come from the NFL.
