Report: Jets love UNC QB Mitch Trubisky

Mitch Trubisky

The New York Jets need a quarterback. That’s no secret. And it sounds like they have one in mind for next year’s NFL Draft.

The New York Daily News reports that the Jets have their eye on North Carolina junior QB Mitch Trubisky. Take a look at this quote shared by the Daily News’ Manish Mehta suggesting the Jets want Trubisky.

“They got their eyes set on the North Carolina quarterback,” one rival scout told the Daily News. “The Jets are all over this kid. All over him. They’ll probably deny it if you ask, but they love that kid. That’s their guy. They’re not going to get him though, because I think that kid is going to get over-drafted.”

Trubisky has thrown for 3,468 yards, 28 touchdowns and four interceptions this season, while rushing for 270 yards and five TDs. He has North Carolina 8-4 this season — his first as the Tar Heels’ starter.

The Jets have Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg on their roster. The latter two were both second-round picks by the Jets but do not appear to be franchise QBs. The Jets are giving Petty a chance to show what he can do, and he started by leading the team to a comeback victory over the 49ers last weekend.

Still, with the odds appearing that none of the QBs on the current roster are the answer, the team is likely to spend its first-round pick in next year’s draft on a QB. The question is whether they’ll be able to use it on Trubisky.
