Greg Sharpe, the longtime announcer of Nebraska Cornhuskers football games, has died at the age of 61, the school announced on Saturday.

Sharpe had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 10 months prior to his death on Friday. Sharpe, who was from Kansas, called Kansas State football and basketball games from 1996 to 2002. He called three Nebraska football games in 2007 and then became the Huskers’ football announcer thereafter. He also called baseball games for Nebraska.

“While his passion and energy on the call of Husker football and baseball brought joy to so many for the past 17 seasons, it comforts us to know that his legacy will live on through these same moments that he narrated and through the relationships that he built,” his family’s statement said. “While the public knew him for his booming voice and infectious personality, those closest to him knew him for his loyalty and dedication to them.”

For 17 years, Greg Sharpe spoke past the microphone and into our hearts.

His legacy will be woven into the moments he narrated and carried on through the relationships he built.

In my short time at Nebraska, Greg Sharpe was a true professional and a great man who i enjoyed speaking with. He was a true husker. Truly inspiring to see him fight and still show up everyday battling such a terrible disease.

Rest in peace to a legend

Even Nebraska’s governor shared a nice message regarding Sharpe.

Greg Sharpe was the voice of Nebraska’s cherished football and baseball traditions for nearly two decades. He invited all of us to be part of something bigger than ourselves. He led a heroic battle against cancer, and his story inspired Nebraskans across the state. Suzanne and I… https://t.co/HtjIuoGC6f
