Saban has coached Alabama since 2007. The 72-year-old coach went 206-29 during his incredible career with the Tide and won six national championships with the team. He also served as a head coach at Toledo, Michigan State and LSU prior to Alabama, and he won a national title with the Tigers, giving him seven overall.
Saban also had a two-year stint in the NFL as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005-2006. He went 15-17 in those two seasons. The 6-10 season he had in 2006 was the only losing season of his head coaching career.
Saban’s retirement comes after Alabama went three years without winning a national championship for the first time during his career with the Tide. Bama went 12-2 and lost to eventual national champion Michigan in the CFP semifinals at the Rose Bowl.
Saban won 11 SEC championships during his coaching career and was a five-time SEC Coach of the Year. He is regarded as one of the greatest college football coaches ever, if not the greatest.
