Former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos is headed to Texas Tech following the injunction to allow certain players an extra year of eligibility.
Castellanos entered the transfer portal, and he is now going to be Will Hammond’s backup at Texas Tech, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
However, Texas Tech could use Castellanos as a wide receiver, according to Nakos.
“Throughout the process, Thomas Castellanos’ agency @JustWinMGMT told @On3 that the QB was open to being used as a wide receiver. He did WR drills at the end of his pro day, and it won’t be a surprise to see Texas Tech explore ways to use him at WR.”

Castellanos threw for 2,760 yards with 15 touchdowns last season at Florida State, and he played one year at UCF and two at Boston College.
However, during the pre-draft process, Castellanos generated buzz as a WR, so it might make sense for Texas Tech to see what he can do at the position, especially if Hammond is going to be the starter.
Texas Tech landed Brendan Sorsby in the transfer portal, and the former Cincinnati Bearcats star was expected to be the QB1 in Lubbock. However, he went into rehab for a gambling issue, and he wound up not playing college football amid plenty of backlash after the rulings.
That thrust Hammond into the QB1 spot, and Castellanos could compete for the job, although he doesn’t have much time before the season opener.
Texas Tech faces Abilene Christian on September 5 in Lubbock.
