When the final whistle blew in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday night, Urban Meyer was one of the happiest men in America. But it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the Ohio State coach during the big game.
Roughly halfway through the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes were leading by six and had to punt from their own end zone. More than one Alabama player made contact with Ohio State punter Cam Johnston, and the officials called running into the kicker. Roughing the kicker would have given Ohio State a crucial first down.
Meyer was furious, as he obviously thought a 15-yard penalty was in order. This inspired him to hurl his headset in frustration. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that it cracked anyone in the head.
The Buckeyes held on to win, and Meyer was in a much better mood and even cracked a pretty funny joke during his postgame press conference. We’d hate to see what he would have done if Ohio State lost because of the call.
