Alex Smith admits he is unsure what his future holds

Alex Smith Chiefs

Despite another successful regular season, Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs folded early in the playoffs once again. That has thrown the quarterback’s future into doubt once more.

Smith said Friday at the Pro Bowl that he wants to stay with the Chiefs, but accepts that after another disappointing playoff success and with Patrick Mahomes waiting in the wings, his time in Kansas City may be up.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of speculation out there on what’s going to happen, what could happen,” Smith told Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “I don’t think anybody totally knows.”

Smith said he’s trying to look on the bright side of the situation, though he admits it would be hard to leave Kansas City.

“I don’t know that this is limbo, but if this is, it (stinks),” Smith said. “But the one (good) thing is knowing that you put a good product out there, you feel good about it, and you know that hopefully, if it comes to (a trade), there is some place (for you).

“I hope to stay there — I love where I’m at. I love the guys, I love the situation, but who knows? Obviously this is a business. I’m not going to be ignorant of anything or naive to anything.”

Reports have indicated that the Chiefs would at least entertain a Smith trade. It looks like it’s going to be an uncertain offseason for the veteran quarterback.
