Anthony Davis: 49ers need Colin Kaepernick to start

Anthony Davis 49ers

The calls for Chip Kelly to give Colin Kaepernick a chance turned into screams late Thursday night, as Blaine Gabbert had another horrific performance in the team’s fourth consecutive loss. Apparently we can add former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis to the list of people who want to see Kelly make a change.

Davis did some tweeting during the game, though he deleted much of what he wrote. It started when he ran a poll asking Niners fans who they would rather see at quarterback, and you can guess how that turned out for Gabbert. Davis then made his personal opinion clear.

Davis, a former first-round pick who infamously retired from the 49ers last month for the second time in about a year, then spent some time defending his decision to walk away from the game. You can read many of those tweets at Deadspin. He also hinted that he could do a better job under center than Gabbert.

Gabbert completed 18-of-31 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He now has just five touchdown passes in five games compared to six interceptions and a passer rating of 69.6.

How long can Kelly stick with this guy? The 49ers coach may have hinted after the game that he will finally evaluate Gabbert’s job status, which is something some of the team’s players reportedly want to see.

Whether or not he is back to his old playing weight or in football shape, it is time to give Kaepernick a shot.
