Deshaun Watson at the Pro Bowl

The Cleveland Browns issued statements on Sunday assuring fans that they did extensive background work on Deshaun Watson before acquiring him in a trade with the Houston Texans. That is not how the attorney representing the women who are suing Watson sees it.

Tony Buzbee, the lawyer representing the 22 women who have accused Watson of sexual assault, told ESPN’s John Barr that the Browns did not reach out to him or any of his clients.

“The Browns organization did not reach out to me. I didn’t expect them to do so, and can understand why they didn’t. But, knowing what I know, they probably should have,” Buzbee said.

The Browns issued statements from their ownership, general manager and head coach. They all praised Watson for his sincerity, though they kept things vague. Owner Jimmy Haslam said the “team’s comprehensive evaluation process was of utmost importance due to the sensitive nature of (Watson’s) situation and the complex factors involved.” You can read the full statements here.

A grand jury has declined to indict Watson, meaning he will not face criminal charges at this time. The civil lawsuits against him are still pending. Buzbee said during the summer that his legal team is preparing to try each of the alleged victims’ cases in front of a jury. He did not totally rule out settlements, however.
