Barry Sanders revealed some personal news on Friday.

The Hall of Fame running back revealed in a statement that he had a health scare over Father’s Day weekend (Father’s day was Sunday, June 16) related to his heart.

“To all of my supporters,

“Over Father’s Day weekend, I experienced a health scare related to my heart. It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we are feeling fine.

“I am grateful for the amazing doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for providing me with needed care. My family and I are thankful for your prayers and support during this time.

“Per my doctors’ recommendation, I am taking this opportunity to prioritize my health and well-being. I appreciate your understanding and continued support,” Sanders statement said.

Sanders turns 56 on July 16. He played in the NFL from 1989-1998 and spent his entire career with the Detroit Lions.

Sanders led the NFL in rushing in 1997 with 2,053 yards, and he led the league in rushing touchdowns in 1991 with 16. He was honored as the NFL MVP in 1997 and walked away from the game after the following season.

Though Sanders’ relationship with the Lions was strained after his retirement, he reconciled with the team and became an ambassador for them in 2017. Last year they even put up a statue in honor of him.
