Ben Roethlisberger seems pleased with Steelers’ new offense

Ben Roethlisberger

Ben Roethlisberger hasn’t always loved the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense, but he seems to be a fan of the early work done this year.

Roethlisberger and the Steelers are working on a new offense under first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada, and the early returns seem positive. Canada worked as the Steelers’ quarterbacks coach last season, so he and Roethlisberger have a level of familiarity. That said, there are definitely some significant differences for Roethlisberger in learning the offense.

“There is a lot of new,” Roethlisberger said, via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “For someone who has had a very similar offense for a very long time, verbiage-wise, it’s taking some extra studying. It’s a fun, new challenge. Guys are getting it, and hopefully it translates into winning football.

“We’ve had quite a few communications. He’s come over. We’ve talked. I told him that I know this is your offense, and he’s like, ‘No, no, this is our offense.’ But I’m like, ‘No, it’s yours.’ And I’m just really trying to do everything I can to be open to the new challenge and say, ‘OK, I’m learning. OK, got it, got it.'”

Roethlisberger’s relationship with his offensive coordinators is important, and it hasn’t always been good. So far, though, everything seems to be working between him and Canada. As long as that continues, Pittsburgh’s offense may be more consistent and dangerous this season.
