The Los Angeles Chargers fired Brandon Staley on Friday, and some oddsmakers believe they are going to make a huge splash when they hire their next head coach.

Shortly after Staley was fired, BetOnline.ag released odds for candidates to become the next head coach of the Chargers. There were 11 candidates listed, and Bill Belichick topped the list at 3/1.

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith and Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore were just behind Belichick at 4/1.

Obviously, Belichick is the most intriguing name on the list.

A lot would have to happen for the Chargers to hire Belichick. The first step would be the 71-year-old coach parting ways with the New England Patriots. One longtime Patriots reporter said this week that the team has already decided to move on from Belichick at the end of the season.

Belichick is under contract with the Patriots through 2024, which is one reason they may not fire him. If team owner Robert Kraft and Belichick agree to a mutual parting of ways and Belichick wants to keep coaching, New England will likely try to trade Belichick to another team. It is unclear if the Chargers would be willing to give up draft-pick compensation and make Belichick one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.

There has been talk for weeks that Belichick could land with the Chargers in 2024. Now that Staley has been fired, that speculation will continue to grow.
