Bill Belichick gives ‘simple’ explanation for why he banned Patriots scouts

Bill Belichick did not mince words when asked about his latest beef with the New England Patriots.

The North Carolina head coach has reportedly barred Patriots scouts from entering the Tar Heels’ training facility and observing the school’s players during practice. The ban is said to only apply to the Patriots, with every other NFL franchise still welcome inside the Bill Koman Practice Complex in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Belichick confirmed the reports Saturday following North Carolina’s 20-3 win over Charlotte. When asked about the reasoning behind the ban, the 73-year-old coach had a “simple” explanation.

“Yeah, it’s clear that I’m not welcome there around their facility, and so they’re not welcome at ours. It’s pretty simple,” Belichick told reporters.

The Patriots are still allowed to request North Carolina’s football staff for footage and additional information on the team’s players. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel downplayed the issue when asked about it on Friday, stating that his team will find other ways to get intel on North Carolina prospects.

There’s an argument that the ban is most detrimental to North Carolina’s players more than anyone else. Rather than having all 32 teams get an up close and personal look at them in practice, the Tar Heels instead got caught in the crossfire of Belichick’s ongoing feud with Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Judging by North Carolina’s brutal season-opening performance against TCU, the Tar Heels may need all the attention they can get from NFL scouts.
