Video: Referee Bill Vinovich steps in after Dustin Colquitt nearly messes up coin toss

Referee Bill Vinovich had to step in after Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt seemed to freeze up a bit during the Super Bowl LIV coin toss.

The San Francisco 49ers won the coin toss and deferred, but when Vinovich turned to Colquitt to find out what the Chiefs were doing, the punter seemed unsure and turned to his teammates for assistance. Vinovich then turned to the other Kansas City captains to try to get clarity, and the Chiefs ultimately did elect to receive.

Colquitt’s confusion nearly led to a Dak Prescott moment on the league’s biggest stage. Vinovich actually did well to step in and make sure everything was clear before turning back to the 49ers to find out which end zone they wanted to defend. It was a pretty awkward moment to start the game, and perhaps a sign of nerves on Colquitt’s part.
