Blake Bortles no longer Jaguars captain

The Jaguars announced their team captains for the upcoming season, and Blake Bortles was not among the five players who were chosen.

Prior to each season, players vote on who the captains will be. For 2016, Bortles, Paul Posluszny, and Carson Tinker received the honor.

This season, the Jaguars will have five captains: Marcedes Lewis, Brandon Linder, Arrelious Benn, Paul Posluszny and Telvin Smith.

Bortles has started every Jaguars game each of the past two seasons. However, after getting benched during the preseason, there was uncertainty that would be the case again this season. The benching may have done some good because head coach Doug Marrone said Bortles has looked good enough in practice since then to start for Jacksonville in Week 1.

While Bortles once again broke camp as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback, the fact that he was not selected as one of the captains doesn’t exactly speak in glowing terms about his place within the locker room.
