The Dallas Cowboys have sorted out a new contract with kicker Brandon Aubrey that will make him quite wealthy.
Aubrey is signing a 4-year, $28 million contract extension with the Cowboys, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money and is the most lucrative contract for a kicker in NFL history.
Aubrey was said to be looking for $10 million annually in contract talks with the Cowboys, while Dallas was hoping to sign him for something closer to Harrison Butker’s $6.4 million annual deal. In the end, the two sides compromised, though the $7 million annual figure is closer to what the Cowboys wanted to do than Aubrey’s original demands.
There is no denying that Aubrey is worth the investment. There is a strong argument to be made that he is the best kicker in the NFL, in part because of how consistent prowess from distance. He is 112/127 in his career on field goal tries, including an impressive 24/27 from 50+ yards. He has even shown himself to be able to essentially win games on his own.
The Cowboys value Aubrey so much that they took an unusual step to ensure they would not lose him while contract talks had stalled. Their efforts have been rewarded, and he will remain with the team for the foreseeable future.
