Brian Daboll answers important question about Giants

The New York Giants will not be holding an open quarterback competition in training camp.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll was asked on Wednesday about his team’s quarterback room, which features a mix of experience and a promising first-round rookie. While Daboll has said throughout the offseason that he is impressed with Jaxson Dart, it does not sound like the former Ole Miss star has a chance to start in Week 1.

Daboll said all of the quarterbacks on New York’s roster will “be out here competing” but that Wilson is the team’s starter.

Russell Wilson is the clear cut starter for the #Giants.

The Giants also signed Jameis Winston this offseason, so the real competition might be for the No. 2 job behind Wilson. Tommy DeVito remains on the roster as well.

Wilson, who is 36, has a very complicated incentives package in his contract with the Giants. He undoubtedly signed with the team because he believed he had a clear path to being the Week 1 starter, and that remains the most likely outcome.

Daboll has been somewhat vague when asked about the quarterback position, but the Giants do not want to rush Dart. They traded up to draft him because they believe he can be their franchise quarterback of the future, not to have him start as a rookie.

Dart led the SEC with 4,279 passing yards last season. He threw 29 touchdown passes. Even if he does not have a legitimate chance to begin the year as a starter, fans will quickly begin clamoring for Dart to be given an opportunity should Wilson struggle.

Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in his lone season with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. He led the team to the playoffs, but the Steelers pivoted to Aaron Rodgers rather than bringing Wilson back.
