Interesting details emerge about Russell Wilson’s new contract

Russell Wilson only ended up landing a one-year deal from the New York Giants, but it could still be a very lucrative year for him.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared some interesting details Wednesday about the 10-time Pro Bowler Wilson’s new contract with the Giants. Rapoport reports that Wilson has a very complicated incentive package in his deal.

Wilson’s package can be worth up to $7.5 million based on a variety of playing time, performance, and playoff incentives, Rapoport says. Additionally, Wilson can make up to $3 million more ($176,500 per game) based on wins and playing more than 50 percent of snaps.

When news of Wilson’s agreement with the Giants broke on Tuesday, we learned that the team had only given him $10.5 million guaranteed. The news of Wilson’s contract structure now confirms that the other half of his deal is all in incentives (for a total potential value of $21 million).

Now 36 years old, Wilson is coming off a 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in which he went 6-5 as their starter and threw for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns to just five interceptions. Wilson missed the first five weeks of the season due to a calf injury but has generally been known to be durable throughout his NFL career.

Still, Wilson may have an uphill climb to cash most of those incentives thanks to the team around him in New York. The Giants went a horrific 3-14 last season and don’t have many quality weapons for Wilson to throw to right now other than Pro Bowl wide receiver Malik Nabers. While New York can still address some of their biggest needs in next month’s NFL Draft, there have been signs too that the Giants were not quite Wilson’s preferred choice.
