Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams responded to critics who are unhappy with his attempt to trademark the name “Iceman.”
Williams’ attempt to trademark the nickname was met with resistance from NBA icon George Gervin, who has long been closely associated with the moniker. Some, including Skip Bayless, went as far as to accuse Williams of trying to “steal” Gervin’s nickname.
Williams fired back at Bayless and his other critics on Friday, indicating that it was simply a business move and not an attempt to steal Gervin’s legacy. He also took issue with Bayless’ use of the word “steal.”
“I was trying give you and everyone else the benefit of the doubt. About knowing business and being smart about it. But I guess not. Foolish of me!” Williams wrote on X.

Williams was dubbed “Iceman” after a series of clutch throws during the Chicago Bears’ run to the playoffs last season. The quarterback is seeking the copyright in order to sell sporting goods and apparel bearing the nickname, but Gervin has stepped in to try to block it.
At this point, Bayless is probably used to getting ripped on by athletes, but Williams is certainly not hurting himself by going after him here.
