Caleb Williams is getting into a legal fight with a man nearly five decades his senior.
The Chicago Bears star quarterback Williams has moved to trademark the name “Iceman,” Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reported this week. Wiliams has reportedly submitted four trademark applications related to the nickname and intends to use it to sell sporting goods, footballs, apparel, bags, and more.
However, Williams is encountering resistance from retired San Antonio Spurs legend George Gervin. Finley reported later in the week that Gervin, in response to Williams’ filings, filed a trademark of his own for “Iceman” and “Iceman 44” (in reference to Gervin’s jersey number). Gervin’s application reportedly notes that “Iceman” is his own longtime nickname and was first used by Gervin in commerce back in 1979.
“I’ve got nothing but respect for [Williams],” Gervin reportedly told Finley. “He’s already proved greatness and his potential upside is great. Like an ‘Iceman.’ But that name is taken … All I’m saying is: ‘Young fella, we’ve already got one ‘Iceman.’’”
The Spurs also made a reference to the brewing legal battle in a post to their X page on Thursday. “there’s only one Iceman,” they wrote along with a picture of Gervin.

Williams, 24, gained the “Iceman” nickname amidst his stellar play for the Bears last season. The former No. 1 draft overall pick led Chicago to their first playoff victory since 2010 and notably began doing an ice-themed celebration after touchdown passes over the course of the year.
But Williams will likely have a tough time arguing against the claim of Gervin, 73, to the “Iceman” name. Gervin had thet iconic nickname dating back to his playing career as a 12-time All-Star and four-time scoring champion. The Hall of Famer Gervin has also been known in recent years to be a bit territorial about these kinds of things.
