The sack occurred on a second down play. Newton was replaced by Derek Anderson, who threw an incomplete pass on 3rd-and-17.
Newton was shown receiving attention on the sidelines, and he even went into the medical tent on the sideline for examination. There was talk that his eye may have been affected by the glass visor on his helmet hitting him.
Newton was able to return to the game for the Panthers’ next possession.
