Cam Newton takes victory lap after Patriots lose Super Bowl

Cam Newton took the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl loss as vindication of his season-long criticism of the team.

Newton has been critical of the Patriots and quarterback Drake Maye for much of the season, suggesting much of their success was down to an easy schedule and forgiving opposition. After New England’s 29-13 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday, Newton appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” and took a victory lap, arguing that the outcome proved him right and referring to the team as “fool’s gold.”

“It was inevitable,” Newton said of New England’s loss. “When you start to see you’re beating everybody (when) they’re not at their best, you’re finding ways to scratch and claw to win. You’re fighting little bro. You’re not fighting big bro. As a matter of fact, you’re fighting the third cousin.

“As you start to identify in that game, as things were transpiring, the Seattle Seahawks were imposing their will and throwing their weight around to say, they’re not locked in. This can’t be the Super Bowl matchup we were hearing so much about.”

Only two of New England’s regular season wins came against an eventual playoff team. They obviously could not choose their opponents, but that very forgiving strength of schedule led many like Newton to question whether the Patriots were as good as their 14-3 record indicated they were. The playoffs did not necessarily silence those doubters, especially since they survived the AFC Championship against Denver Broncos backup Jarrett Stidham in a snowy game.

The Patriots did take note of the comments during the regular season, but fair or not, their Super Bowl performance will validate the criticisms in the eyes of those who had been making them. Seattle was the dominant team for three quarters, and most of New England’s yardage came during their desperate fourth quarter comeback attempt. They were absolutely overwhelmed by the best team they faced all year.
