Cardale Jones thought Bills phone call on draft day was prank

Cardale Jones

Heading into the NFL Draft, when Cardale Jones would be selected was among the many mysteries. It was the Bills who took a chance on the Ohio State quarterback, making him pick No. 139.

Not surprisingly, the phone of a player expected to be drafted can be quite busy until his name is called and that was the case for Jones. The 23-year-old received numerous calls from various area codes before getting the one he had been waiting for.

“I guess they were expecting me to see a weird number and think I was getting drafted by that team,” Jones said during a radio interview with WGR 550 SportsRadio in Buffalo. “I don’t know if it was one of my buddies playing a joke, but it wasn’t a great feeling I’ll tell you that.”

When the Bills contacted Jones to inform him he had been selected in the fourth round, it’s understandable Jones initially thought it was a prank considering what happened leading up to that moment.

“I thought initially it was a prank call,” Jones said. “I was getting calls from some weird numbers all day, and I would answer and they would hang up. So I didn’t believe it until really my name went across the TV screen. I was watching it with my family and my name popped up on the screen and I went crazy.”

Going crazy for Jones included ripping off his shirt, which is a perfect way to celebrate a dream coming true.

Projections for what Cardale Jones can be in the pros are varied. One scout labeled him a poor man’s JaMarcus Russell. The good thing for Jones, and Buffalo, is he won’t be immediately thrown into the fire from day one. Jones will be brought along slowly while Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel handle snaps in the time being. If Urban Meyer’s theory is correct, Jones’ development may not take as long as some think.
