Cardinals sign RB DJ Foster, may bring back Chris Johnson

DJ Foster

The Arizona Cardinals are already making arrangements to fill the void left by David Johnson, who is expected to miss some time with a wrist injury.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals are signing D.J. Foster off the New England Patriots’ practice squad.

Foster is an extremely versatile back who has experience playing both running back and wide receiver. He was a record-setting running back in high school at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale and later went to Arizona State. At ASU, he played running back his first three years before transitioning to wide receiver as a senior.

Foster has been with the New England Patriots’ organization as an active roster member and practice squad player since signing with them after going undrafted last year. He saw action in three games last season. He has strong receiving skills, which should help replicate what Johnson does for the Cardinals.

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians also said Monday that the team will consider bringing back Chris Johnson. The former 2,000-yard rusher spent the past two seasons with Arizona but was cut from the roster this year. He remains unsigned.
