Chiefs get meme treatment after committing familiar blunder in Week 16

Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling lines up offsides

The Kansas City Chiefs were in disbelief when they were flagged for lining up offsides two weeks ago, but they somehow have not learned their lesson.

Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling committed an offsides penalty during the first half of his team’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday. The penalty was declined after Mahomes was sacked on third down, but fans were in disbelief that a Chiefs player would make the same mistake that cost the team a win against the Buffalo Bills in Week 14.

Kadarius Toney was penalized for lining up offsides late in Kansas City’s Week 14 loss to the Bills. The penalty took what would have been an electric go-ahead touchdown away (video here). Toney was clearly at fault in that case, but Patrick Mahomes still threw a complete tantrum. Both Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid were fined for criticizing the officiating crew over the call.

If Valdes-Scantling was offsides, his mistake was not quite as egregious as Toney’s.

Because the penalty was declined, it was not a factor. That did not stop fans from giving the Chiefs the meme treatment.

Had Mahomes not been sacked, the Chiefs may have actually had a legitimate argument this time. The same could not be said for Toney’s inexplicable lack of awareness two weeks ago.
