Chris Baker: Robert Griffin ‘needs a coaching staff that believes in him’
Robert Griffin III is all but certain to get another shot in the NFL when the Washington Redskins inevitably release him, and one of his teammates believes the quarterback can do a lot with it if he ends up in the right situation.
On Monday, Redskins defensive end Chris Baker told Alex Marvez and Phil Savage on SiriusXM NFL Radio that Griffin needs a coach who will back him.
“I think Robert just needs an opportunity,” Baker said. “He needs a coaching staff that believes in him 100 percent and is going to work with him to help him become best quarterback he can be. This wasn’t the ideal situation or ideal year for a guy like Robert Griffin.”
RG3’s NFL career got off to a great start in his rookie season under Mike Shanahan, but he has not been the same player since tearing his ACL in the playoffs that year. It’s hard to tell if the injury — his second torn ACL — has had a major affect on Griffin or if he simply regressed.
Whatever the case, the former Baylor star deserves credit for remaining quiet this past season and not becoming a distraction.
“He handled it like a professional,” Baker said. “He came to work every day and did what he was asked whether it was the best look as a scout-team quarterback or to give the offense a great look as a (scout-team) safety. He did it all. He was a team guy.
“If a team gives him a chance, he’s going to prove a lot of people wrong. He’s going to be a hell of a player.”
It’s unlikely that any team will sign Griffin as a starter, but he is just 26 and has plenty of time to develop if he lands in the right situation. The more we hear, the more it sounds like one team that has been frequently linked to RG3 is out. That doesn’t mean he can’t succeed.
