Jonathan Taylor is the latest running back to cash in with a new deal this summer.
Insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported on Thursday that Taylor has agreed to a 2-year, $44 million contract extension with the AFC South franchise. The deal carries a maximum payout of $47 million and comes with a $39 million guarantee.
It is also the third-largest contract ever by a running back.
Taylor’s massive extension comes on the heels of fellow running back Bijan Robinson’s historic deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
The former Wisconsin Badgers star originally signed a four-year, $7.28 million rookie contract with Indianapolis after the Colts selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In 2023, he signed a three-year, $42 million extension that will pay him $12 million in 2026. Under his new contract, Taylor is set to earn $22 million over the duration of the deal.
The 27-year-old Taylor has played for the Colts ever since he entered the league, and his latest contract will keep him in Indianapolis uniform for years beyond the 2026 campaign.
Taylor has been an integral part of the Colts’ offense even though the team ranked just 17th last season with 118.1 rushing yards per game. He has rushed for at least 1,100 yards in four of his six seasons so far in the league. He led the NFL in rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18) in 2021. Over the last two seasons, he burned rubber for 3,016 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on 626 carries.
