The Indianapolis Colts have signed a former second-round pick to their practice squad.
Indy on Monday announced that they have cut running back Khalil Herbert and signed Ameer Abdullah instead. Abdullah was a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions out of Nebraska in 2015 and has played 10 seasons in the NFL.
Abdullah, 32, spent the last three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders. He had 311 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns last season, along with 40 catches for 261 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns. He was productive in the team’s offense last season and played in 16 games, making three starts.
The Colts looked good in their season-opening game on Sunday. They stunned the Dolphins with a 33-8 win. Jonathan Taylor is still their lead back and had 71 yards on 18 carries. DJ Giddens was second on the offense with 41 yards on 12 carries. New quarterback Daniel Jones also posed a rushing threat and added 26 yards and 2 TDs.
The Colts likely picked up Abdullah over Herbert because they want his versatility as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
