Cowboys reportedly had permission from Broncos to talk to Mark Sanchez

Who’d have believed that in 2016 we’d see a tampering controversy centering around Mark Sanchez?

That is exactly what we have, though, with the latest report saying that the Dallas Cowboys were granted permission to speak to the veteran quarterback by the Denver Broncos.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the Cowboys had permission to speak to Sanchez as Denver was trying to trade him. The reason, though, was that Dallas was trying to get Sanchez to lower the salary he’d agreed to with the Broncos. Things fell short, and he was ultimately released.

The problem that remains for Dallas is that they likely did not have permission to negotiate an entirely new deal with the quarterback before his release was even formalized, which may ultimately be what happened. If that’s the case, Dallas should be worried, as Florio likens the situation to when the Kansas City Chiefs lost a third-round pick for illegally speaking directly to receiver Jeremy Maclin when he was a free agent.

What we do know right now is that the NFL is looking into the matter. You can bet the Cowboys wouldn’t be too happy if their pursuit of Sanchez actually gets them in trouble.
