Cowboys seem to have picked Michael Gallup over Amari Cooper

The Dallas Cowboys seem to have made a choice at wide receiver.

Dallas is sitting around $20 million over the salary cap and looking to shed some money. Reports on Friday said that the Cowboys were likely to end up cutting Amari Cooper.

Reports also said that the Cowboys were close to a deal with one of their other receivers, Michael Gallup.

Gallup was a third-round pick by the Cowboys out of Colorado State in 2018. He had 66 catches for 1,107 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2019. He had 59 catches for 843 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2020. Gallup is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in January and might not be ready for Week 1 next season. But the Cowboys must view him as better value for the money than Cooper, who is making $20 million in base salary.

Surely the Cowboys would love to keep Cooper. But he has been frustrated with his role on the team, and the Cowboys didn’t seem to be satisfied with the production he was giving them. For $20 million, you want more than 68 catches and 865 yards. Dallas has enough weapons between CeeDee Lamb and Dalton Schultz that Cooper is a third option.
