Daniel Jones is expected to join a playoff contender once he clears waivers, and there is one team that might even be able to offer the veteran quarterback an opportunity to start.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is dealing with a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has not ruled out Purdy missing more time. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the possibility of Jones signing with San Francisco would be “very real” if Purdy were to have to sit out beyond Week 12.

Purdy’s injury is to his throwing shoulder. The 49ers have not provided much information about it. For now, the plan is for Purdy to be reevaluated on Monday.

Brandon Allen will start for San Francisco on Sunday. Joshua Dobbs will serve as the backup. Allen is in his ninth NFL season, but he has only started nine games in his career. Jones is far more experienced and has never played in an offense that is as good as the one the Niners have, so the idea of him playing in Shanahan’s system is intriguing.

We know of one notable team that will not pursue Jones, but it sounds like the former No. 6 overall pick will have options. He might want to wait to see what happens with Purdy before making a decision.

The 49ers fell to 5-5 with their loss to the Seattle Seahawks last week, so they have some ground to make up in the NFC playoff race.
