Danny Trevathan to undergo thumb surgery, out indefinitely
The Chicago Bears are off to an 0-2 start, and they got some more bad news on Tuesday.
Bears head coach John Fox said that linebacker Danny Trevathan will have thumb surgery on Wednesday morning, per Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. Though Fox made sure to stress that the injury is not a season-ender, Trevathan will be out indefinitely.
Trevathan, 26, signed a four-year, $24.5 million contract with Chicago this offseason, fresh off winning Super Bowl 50 as a cornerstone of the Denver Broncos’ acclaimed defense. He had already managed to log 15 combined tackles and a sack in his first two games as a Bear.
The Bears have OK depth at inside linebacker with fellow new acquisition Jerrell Freeman and Florida State product Christian Jones ready to pick up the slack. But the rest of their defense remains highly questionable, and it will be very difficult for them to duplicate Trevathan’s multipurpose skillset in the middle of the field.
