Derek Carr fined by NFL over TD celebration
Derek Carr broke out a smooth touchdown celebration after he scored in the New Orleans Saints’ win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, but the dance has cost the quarterback some money.
Carr was fined $14,000 by the NFL for his Michael Jackson-inspired touchdown celebration, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports.
Carr went 11/16 for 243 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception in the Saints’ surprising 44-19 blowout of the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Carr also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first half to put New Orleans up 34-13, and he celebrated with a dance move that included a crotch grab. You can see the video here.
The NFL has a history of fining players who incorporate crotch grabs into their celebrations, so Carr probably would not have had to pay if he left that part out. The veteran said after the game that he is proud of his dancing ability, however, so maybe the $14,000 was worth it to him.
New Orleans has been one of the most surprising teams in the NFL this season. Their dominant performance against the Cowboys came after they trounced the Carolina Panthers 47-10 in Week 1. The Saints have now had 15 offensive possessions through two games, and they have come away with points on all of them.
Carr rarely scores rushing touchdowns, but it will be interesting to see if he tones it down the next time he gets into the end zone. The Saints will face the NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons on the road in Week 3.
