Derek Carr’s season could be over before it even begins.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury that could prevent him from playing this season. According to Rapoport, surgery is an option for Carr.
The news on Carr has come out three days before players were set to report for the team’s offseason program.

Carr signed with the New Orleans Saints in March 2023, a few weeks after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders. He’s entering the third year of a four-year, $150 million contract. Carr modified his contract in March to drop his cap hit for 2025 to $20.4 million. He has a $40 million base salary for 2026 with a $69 million cap hit for that season.
Carr has played two seasons with the Saints. He has passed for 6,023 yards, 40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 27 games with the team. The Saints have gone 14-13 in his starts.
Carr’s injury means the Saints will have to explore options for the upcoming season. They have the No. 9 pick in the upcoming draft. They could also look into veterans such as Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins.
Now it’s starting to make more and more sense why the Saints have become the favorites to select a certain quarterback in the draft.
