Derrius Guice criticized for posting photo with Donald Trump

Derrius Guice

Derrius Guice tried to put politics aside and express excitement for a recent opportunity he got to meet the President of the United States, and the reaction the Washington Redskins running back got probably won’t surprise you.

Guice, who played at LSU from 2015-2017, accompanied the Tigers on their White House trip to meet Donald Trump earlier this month. The former second-round pick shared a photo from the visit on Twitter and said it was an “honor” to meet the president regardless of political views.

They gone get salty.. but I don’t get into politics. All I know is I come from nothing, and it will always be an honor to meet a president of the United States! God Bless everyone pic.twitter.com/aXb9PZyMij

While Trump is extremely unpopular among many pro athletes and their teams, the point Guice was making seemed to be that he never imagined himself standing in the Oval Office given his background. He grew up in a very impoverished area of Baton Rouge and lost his father at age 6. However, many felt that was not a good enough reason to pose with Trump.

Here are the two most “liked” responses to Guice’s photo:

You just did get into politics. It’s the air we breathe and the water we drink. Politics is the freedom we have or don’t have. This man is a danger to all of it. So, perhaps you should get into politics and understand what’s happening. You could do some good, unlike trump.

"Don't get into politics" Yeah, that's a lot of the reason you came from nothing, and why a lot of minorities are still in nothing.

Glad you are using that college education for something.

You would've loved Hitler. He was a powerful guy, as well.

Guice held his ground despite the backlash.

People won’t always agree with you.. but that’s why it’s your life and not theirs

— (@DhaSickest) January 25, 2020

LSU’s visit to the White House included a very awkward speech from Trump, and that was hardly a surprise to many of the president’s detractors. Still, Guice can’t be the first player who was proud to take a photo in the Oval Office.
