Report: Deshaun Watson in line for next QB megadeal

Deshaun Watson

While a lot of buzz has surrounded the inevitable contract negotiations between Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, he may not be the next quarterback to sign a huge new deal.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Sunday that Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is likely to be the next quarterback to sign a huge contract, as the two sides aren’t that far apart and Houston has already made Laremy Tunsil the highest-paid left tackle in the game.

“Deshaun Watson’s big pay day will be coming at some point, because several league execs I spoke to believe that Watson will be the next quarterback in line for that mega extension — even before Patrick Mahomes, because Mahomes is sort of in his own stratosphere with all the accomplishments,” Fowler said, via Garrett Stepien of 247 Sports. “He can wait little bit, where Watson and the Texans might have a smaller gap to bridge. And the Texans pinned themselves in a corner when they re-signed left tackle Laremy Tunsil for a 22-million-dollar-a-year deal. He’s the highest-paid left tackle. Now they need to make their quarterback the highest-paid, and that very well could happen in the next few months.”

There has been chatter what Watson is unhappy with the Texans over their trade of DeAndre Hopkins. It sounds like there’s momentum toward a deal anyway, and Watson is willing to commit his long-term future to Houston. He’ll definitely get a lot of money to do it.
