Dwayne Haskins named Redskins starter for Week 8 vs. Bills

There have been numerous reports this season that Dwayne Haskins is struggling to transition to the NFL, but the Washington Redskins are going to give the rookie a shot to prove all the naysayers wrong.

The Redskins have officially announced that Haskins will make his first NFL start on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Case Keenum is still in the concussion protocol after leaving last week’s game, so Colt McCoy will serve as Haskins’ backup.

Haskins came on in relief of Keenum in a game earlier this season, and he threw three interceptions against the New York Giants. He then replaced Keenum again in the second half of last week’s 19-9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and there were times when players looked confused about what plays were being called. That has led to reports that the former Ohio State star is having trouble learning Washington’s offense, but interim head coach Bill Callahan feels he deserves a chance to start.

Haskins has tried to defend himself over talk that he is struggling with his preparation, and the best way to do that will be to play well on Sunday. He’ll have his work cut out for him in a hostile environment against a good defense.
