Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio found a creative way to dodge the media on Thursday, borrowing a page from the previous day’s Capitol Hill spectacle.
One day after Dr. Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a Senate hearing on COVID-19 origins, Fangio opened his training camp press conference with a smile and a plan.
Asked about the team’s safety situation and whether Marcus Epps held the starting job, Fangio replied, “I’m gonna be like Fauci and just take the Fifth Amendment on all questions. Did you guys see that? Oh my god.”
Reporters laughed as the veteran coach briefly pleaded the Fifth before answering the question anyway.
But Fangio was not finished. Later, when a question about outside linebacker depth and a possible return of Brandon Graham surfaced, he noted that general manager Howie Roseman had faced the same query the day before.
“And what did Howie say?” Fangio asked. “He ducked you? He Faucied you?”
The light jab landed cleanly in the room. Fangio, never one to waste a punchline, used the moment to lighten the early-camp mood without turning the session into a policy debate. He quickly moved on to personnel evaluations, scheme adjustments, and the usual training-camp topics.
In a sport that rarely intersects with congressional hearings, Fangio proved once again that even defensive coordinators stay current on the news—and know how to work a room.
