Evan McPherson gets screwed out of an NFL record 67-yard field goal

Evan McPherson attempting a kick

Evan McPherson just barely missed out on setting an all-time NFL record on Sunday.

The Cincinnati Bengals kicker McPherson had a kick for the ages during his team’s Week 6 showdown against the Green Bay Packers … albeit one that did not count. In the second quarter at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc., McPherson came out with one second left to attempt a field goal with the ball at the Green Bay 49-yard line.

That amounted to a 67-yard field goal try, which would have been an NFL record. McPherson uncorked the kick, and it glanced off the crossbar … and in!

But there was only one problem. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called timeout before the snap in an attempt to “ice” McPherson. As a result, the would-be record kick did not count.

McPherson then attempted a re-kick from the same spot and came up well short. Thus, it was an absolutely excellent “icing” by LaFleur and the Packers.

That would have broken the current record for the longest field goal of all-time, which was set by then-Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker with a 66-yard FG under a dome in 2021. Meanwhile, McPherson was kicking on Sunday against the Packers in outdoor conditions at a relatively normal elevation in Green Bay too.

We have seen some NFL kickers easily hit from would-be record distances during pregame warmups before. But McPherson came that close to doing so in an actual game with his nullified 67-yard banger that would have also surpassed the record set this season by Tampa Bay’s Chase McLaughlin for the longest outdoor field goal of all-time (65 yards).
