Giants call out Bill Belichick in new statement about Brian Flores allegations
The New York Giants are addressing Bill Belichick’s part in allegations made against them by Brian Flores.
The Giants issued a new statement on Thursday offering a more detailed rebuttal to allegations made by Flores in his lawsuit against the NFL. The Giants state that they have “concrete and objective evidence” proving that they made the decision to hire Brian Daboll on Jan. 28, one day after Flores interviewed with the team. That disputes Flores’ contention, based on an accidental text from Belichick, that the Giants had essentially decided to hire Daboll before interviewing Flores.
The Giants also specifically took aim at the texts from Belichick cited in Flores’ lawsuit.
“The allegation that the Giants’ decision had been made prior to Friday evening, January 28, is false. And to base that allegation on a text exchange with Bill Belichick in which he ultimately states that he ‘thinks’ Brian Daboll would get the job is irresponsible. …
“In addition, Mr. Belichick does not speak for and has no affiliation with the Giants. Mr. Belichick’s text exchange provides no insight into what actually transpired during our head coaching search,” the statement said.
Belichick’s text messages are a significant part of Flores’ case against the Giants. The date Belichick sent the texts was unclear, but the Giants contend they were sent Monday, one day before Daboll’s formal in-person interview.
There are some others who seemingly had some advance knowledge that Daboll would get the Giants job even before Flores interviewed. The Giants would likely say the same about this source as they did about Belichick, but there was undeniably buzz about Daboll being the leading candidate before Flores’ interview.
Beyond this, the Giants also argued in their statement that they have proof their interest in Flores was genuine.
